Combine the letters to one compound path by applying Path > Combine. Apply Path > Object to Path and Object > Ungroup to get separate ungrouped Bezier curves. The text stays editable in Inkscape with this transform, but you need an editable path for drawing. Now open the Align and Distribute dialog, and using Last selected in the "Relative to" dropdown, center your two items horizontally and vertically. The text should have a solid fill color but no stroke. Holding the Shift key, now select your text - ONLY your text, not the rectangle under it. Select your image, and click on "Raise To Top" to make sure it will be above your text. Deselect the two items, then select only your text, center it and make it white.
